Help!

I found a mirror...
And I think I like it - a lot.

But, based on the look my husband gave me when I showed it to him, I am wondering if I need a reality check.

Tell me you think:

Dreadful? Or delightful?

Gaudy? Or gorgeous?

Frightful? Or fantastically schmaztastic?

The reason that I need your help is not because I am considering purchasing it (I love you, Pottery Barn, but I can think of quite a few ways to spend $600, and a shell mirror is not one of them!). I actually already have a mirror of very similar shape, and am considering breaking out the glue gun to make one myself.

So, am I crazy? Would I be ruining a perfectly good mirror? Or should I go for it?

I really love it. But would never spend $600 on a mirror. I have found really cool mirrors at Ross for less than $100. Not shell ones but shaped like that. Could you maybe buy a mirror and buy some shells??? A little hot glue?

YAY! You are back to blogging! I do like the mirror but I think it is pretty seasonal, especially for the labor of love it will take to glue on 1 million shells.... but, then again it would be perfect with your summer decor! I guess I am no help!!! Can't wait to see what you decide.......

It looks pretty cool from a distance. Close up it may look like a little scary and overdone.

I like the shape and style, maybe not SO overloaded with the shells. Maybe you can do some shell accents?

Love it!!!!
My husband would hate it, kinda girly.
What about using a super cheap mirror to glue the shells onto and using it just for spring/summer?

I agree with chermonblie: it's pretty from a distance, but I didn't like it close-up. Unless you have a beach-themed room, I wouldn't attempt it. It would be neat in a beach house or something like that, though.

I love PB, but that's one of the items that I didn't like so much. I think it feels a bit gaudy to me. And think of all the dust it will collect!

How about doing that technique for something smaller, like a picture frame. You'll get a better idea of how well you think you will like it first.

i say go for it!!! I always try to recreate pottery barns stuff my own... it is just too expensive!!

hmmmm ... shells aren't really my thing. maybe it's because i grew up at the beach, and i'm over them? not sure ... but, that being said ... i've seen you do some super-fun stuff using things i wouldn't normally pick out myself, and i've loved your creative creations! so, i say go for it ... it can't cost much to try, and then you'll know!
also ... i'm doing a giveaway on my blog (redowldesigns.blogspot, formerly kserasara) and would love for you to enter!!

I would totally go for it - particularly if you have shells from a vacation or local beach... then it's cool and has memories. It is a tad seasonal, but to me that makes things better. I love to put away some lovelies and take out old favorites that are fresh again...

Honestly, I don't really love it. I have to agree with those who said it looks nice from far away, but close up I just think it's kind of gaudy.

Make it! Make it!
Then buy $600 worth of fabric and crafting supplies....

I like it. I think it is really pretty as is. I think the key to making sure that it isn't gaudy and outrageous is to make the color a neutral color like in the PB pic. Most of the room is white, so the white mirror doesn't stand out and scream, "Look at me!" I think it is tastefully done.

I agree witht the "I like it from a distance" comments.

I have to tell you that I saw on HGTV when they were doing a redo on a house that they made a mirror VERY similar to this one in PB. I saw this a while back, but you made be able to cruise their website and find a how to. The only thing that really stood out to me about it was that it ended up being EXTREMELY heavy, so they had to have good wall anchors. It saved them a ton of money, but cost in other ways, aka, time. LOL. Good luck!

I think the previous poster's idea about a picture fram would be a great place to start! You could do one on the larger size even, and get a feel for whether you *really* like the look enough for a mirror!

I like it. I think as long as the shells are small, its not gaudy. Just textured. Of course, please avoid the pink shells. My husband's grandparents live in Florida and I have several things decked out in pink shells. They are more rare you see, so I should like them more. I would still stick with the white/off white ones.

Ease him in with looking at this one (which I love but he will run from the room if you suggest this one maybe?)

Then show him that one again and I bet its WONDERFUL.

I say go for it...

Are you kidding? It is sooooo pretty! (He'll get used to it!)

It looks much cuter in the last picture where you can see the sofa too. I think you should try to make your own $600 is a lot of mirror that you may not want at Christmas time. Your are very creative I think that you can make one to look just as good or better.

I say go for it! I've made 19 of these in my mosaic career, and have 3 in my house. They really are lovely as long as you choose your shells wisely. Good all year round too!

I think it is fab...would add a perfect summer touch to your house. I am on the hunt for some cheap ways to "summerize" my house. I say go for it!!

This is this kind of item that would need to be VERY carefully done to avoid looking like "crazed crafter overdosing on Gaudy". Experiment with a smaller piece first?

I have to admit that I really like the effect on the wall behind the sofa.

Oh, I totally dig that mirror! Go for it and be sure to let us know just HOW LONG it took ya to make it.

Looks like quiet the task.

MommaMari said...

do it with varying shades/sizes of cream colored buttons instead.

Christa said...

I would rather make a fun chalkboard with that pretty frame. It would be very hard to make that with the shells and make it look professional

Andrea said...

I like the button idea :)

I am just not that into it. But I am not into the beachy stuff. But I am sure you would make the rest of the room look fabulous. I agree with someone else who said up close it would look gaudy. There my two cents for what it is worth :-)

I love the idea of a shell mirror. You know you can do recreate it and feel great knowing you didn't have to spend $600. It may be seasonal but who cares. You could always move it to another room (guest room or even powder room). You should definitely do it!

Um, not really my style, but definitely pretty. I just adore PB!!

I think it all depends on what you're planning on doing with it--if you have a cotage style home, it would be great. My house is more country/farmy, so it would look silly.

I like the mirror from afar, but up close not so cute. I also like the button idea or making some frames. I was also thinking, that would be the biggest pain to clean and dust. So many nooks and crannies... i don't know that would bug me.

Brenda said...

I do like the shells, but that one has too many. Like, too thick on the frame. Shells would be nice, but not that many.

And I love pottery barn, but even if I COULD afford it, I'm not sure I could MAKE myself.

I agree with what a lot of people have said. From a distance, jkust looking at the shape and color, I love it. And I still really like it close up, it's just that it'd be difficult to blend with most decor. It would require a very soecific type of interior to make it work.

gatornic said...

Wow, $600 is crazy but I love the mirror. With the right decor, it'd be gorgeous. That's a lot of shells, though.. do you have that many???

caryn said...

It is really beautiful.....where I live-on an island, there is a woman who makes these....please check this--www.roanokeisland.net/lp/hisshells

Her shop is called "His Shells" and just like the one you found these are gor-G-mous!!!

Adams Family said...

Hmmm...since I'm not much of a shell fan, I have to say it is not my favorite. I like the shape and agree with the others who said it looks good from a distance. That's a hard one because it seems people either LOVE shells or really don't like them. I would fall in the latter camp.

Good luck with your decision!!

Cassie @ You Go Girl said...

I call it like I see it. I'm siding with your husband on this one. LOL! But, hey, I don't have to LOVE everything. If you love it, go for it!

Theresa said...

I love it. Of course, it would fit right in with our home here in the Florida Keys, where life is always a beach.

Katie said...

OK, I have seen some really hideous shell mirrors. But that one looks NEAT-O. So go for it, I bet you can recreate it!

Tim and Maria Jones said...

Make it, but make it how you want it. If you think the one in the catalog is too gaudy, change it. That's what i love about being inspired by something and making it fit your style.

Bobbi Kenow said...

Unless you own beach front property in Oklahoma, I would pass on the seashell idea!! Make sure to post what you decide!!

Katherine said...

I love it! Go for it!

Just my opinion . . . far away, it looks nice but up close . . . uugh!! I would rather showcase shells in a vase or something. I like the idea of framing a mirror with something . . . just not shells . . . it's so seasonal. Whatever you decide to do, show pictures . . . I'd love to see them! =) Speaking of showing pictures . . . I'm going to try to sit down this week and update from our trip! =)

I absolutely love it! I may not spend $600 dollars on it if I could find a mirror of a similar shape and make it myself. It may seem a bit expensive to be purchasing a mirror and shells seperately and making it yourself, but compared to $600 I don't think it's at all a contest!

I have a large window frame that I've done over in a similar way and have added a mirror to the background. Same concept, different shape. It used to be in my house on the lake, but we took it down because it was just too darn huge! I would love to have one this size, maybe I'm going to go make a new one!
