How to make a crayon holder for boys

As you can tell from my fabric selection, I am not showing you my bandana apron (that's for tomorrow). Instead I am veering into a new and mysterious world: crafts for boys. It is a scary place for me (having two girls myself, I feel completely lost when it comes to what boys like), but I'm willing to go there, because it is for my two favorite boys - my nephews.

Apparently they thought my crayon apron was a pretty cool idea, but were not interested in actually wearing one

Aprons are for girls after all. I needed to come up with something that accomplished the same thing (crayon/marker holder), but did it in boy style. Something that said, "Sure I like to color, but I'm also tough!"

When my husband suggested making something that looked like an ammo-holder chest strap (I have no idea what they are called, but hopefully by seeing the finished product you will see what I mean), I knew that he was onto something. Plus, you can't go wrong with camouflage.

I began by cutting 3 pieces of fabric, and then covered them in the Iron-on Vinyl (the coolest craft product ever invented - I talked about it more here).

Don't tell my nephews, but I used a girl scout sash as my shape inspiration. My third piece of fabric is just a narrower version of the other pieces.

I wanted the crayons to slide through on both sides, so I cut the smaller piece even narrower with pinking shears (no hemming the edges!).

Then I began sewing 1" spaces for each crayon to slide through.

The finished product included 12 crayon slots.

Using double fold bias tape, I finished the sides (but not the tops and bottoms) of the two strap pieces.

At this point, I layered them over each other, right sides together, and attached them at the top and bottom.

I made this pattern up as I went along, so it isn't perfect (I wish it had 16 slots for the crayons), but all things considered, I think it turned out well. Very boyish. And tough.

My daughter wasn't too enthused about modeling it, though: "But mom, it's for boys!"

I guess I accomplished my goal.

Wow! It is just one great idea after another over here! My boys are a little too old for this, but I think this would make a great b-day present for some of their younger friends.

WHAT a cool idea.

By the way, I think the word you want is "bandolier." Here is a link to the GIS: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=bandolier&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

Very, very cool.
