Ruffle Skirt... From a Dish Towel!

I have documentation (i.e. my last post) stating that I would provide a tutorial for the ruffle skirt. 

Promises mean nothing to me, apparently. Just words!

I did complete another skirt, but failed to take a Single. Picture. Of the process.

(The outfit pictured is for my niece's upcoming birthday. I found the top at Old Navy, and embellished it with an appliqued "3.")

However, the skirt is so simple, I can guide you through without the aid of a full tutorial:

1. Find a cute dishtowel (TJ Maxx has a great selection). Follow these instructions to fashion a skirt.

2. Cut a strip of coordinating fabric approximately 3" wide. The length of the strip should be about double the circumference of the skirts hem (this will allow for an extra fluffy ruffle).

3. Zig-zag stitch along either side of the length of the strip (this helps minimize fraying). 

4. Sew a straight line down the center of the strip using a basting stitch. 

5. Pull thread until the ruffle gathers to the desired fullness.

6. Sew the ruffle onto the hem of the skirt, allowing the ruffle to extend the hem by 1/2" or so.

7. Snip all of the fraying strings.

8. Have your child practice saying "thank you", because they will receive lots of compliments when they wear it! 

(sidenote: My girls always have the hardest time remembering to thank someone for a compliment on their dress; usually they nod in agreement. As if to say, "Yes, you are right, I AM cute!)
